MELBOURNE, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Australian home electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi Ltd (JBH.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said its sales and earnings for the first quarter were well up on the previous year, as consumers continue to spend on home entertainment goods despite a softer economy.

"Sales for the first quarter were on budget and earnings for July and August were ahead of budget, as margins remain solid combined with good cost control," the retailer said on Tuesday. The news contrasted with rival electrical retailer Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd (HVN.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), which warned last week of an 18 percent slide in profit for July and August affected by its Irish business.
