HIGHLIGHTS-Euro zone finance ministers' meeting
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 6 (Reuters) - The following are comments by euro zone finance ministers and other officials in connection with their meeting on Monday in Luxembourg.
EUROGROUP CHAIRMAN JEAN-CLAUDE JUNCKER
On government actions:
"We use the instruments available to us. They apply throughout Europe and I don't see what difference there would have been between the French government, Belgian, and German governments if we had had another instrument available to us."
"We have done it in line with our responsibilities ... you're never going to have a lack of instruments to use in Europe if you have the willpower to achieve your objectives, and we have."
"There is a difference between what goes on on stock exchanges and the health of banks."
ECB PRESIDENT JEAN-CLAUDE TRICHET
On principles of coordination:
"I would say that it is extremely important that all partners, authorities can stick to these principles."
"You can tell the citizens they can count on the ECB. We have offered necessary liquidity to keep the market going. We were first to do it. Our diagnosis was seen as irrelevant then they realised we were right, there was a problem ... governments have faced up to their responsibilities. Who can say we have done worse than the other side of the Atlantic. I don't think you can maintain that there is no coordination -- that is what we have been doing today."
Asked if problems were to do with deposits being withdrawn:
"As far as the whole system is concerned ... we decide to provide liquidity -- that aspect of the matter is insignificant, we are talking about tiny amounts. I can't confirm anything for the moment. I'm just telling you this is insignificant."
EU MONETARY AFFAIRS COMMISSIONER JOAQUIN ALMUNIA
"We have to act in the euro zone and in the (European) Union in a coordinated way."
"We have systemic risks to confront and we need to rise to the challenge with good responses."
"The global situation is difficult, so we need to have overall responses based on a clear, coordinated, European Union-wide approach." Continued...
